In my portrait work, I am as concerned with capturing the subject's
personality as with the physical likeness. Using candid photos, my commissions
often involve a montage of images to tell a 'story' about the life stages
and special interests of the person. I work with an acrylic wash for undertones
and colored pencil for the intricate details. This mixed-media approach
gives a 'painterly' appearance to areas such as background and hair, while
allowing me to render the likeness with the control of the pencil.
The
play of light and shadow on my subject, whether it is a portrait, landscape
or still-life, has always interested me. Using the contrasts between the
lights and darks, the warm tones and the cool tones, my goal is to create
the feeling of the moment and invite the viewer into the scene.
